These data confirm genetically the interaction between Lef 1 and Alx 4 and further reveal unknown , overlapping roles for these transcription factors in embryonic vasculogenesis . . 0.62044881^^^ We determined previously that the mesenchymally restricted , paired like homeodomain protein Aristaless like 4 ( Alx 4 ) interacts with Lef 1 and together alters promoter activity of candidate genes . 0.5185241^^^

In data that we present here , we show that Alx 4 is expressed in mesenchymal condensations of a diverse group of tissues whose development is dependent on epithelial mesenchymal interactions , many of which are additionally dependent on expression of the HMG box containing protein , LEF 1 . ^^^

Alx 4 binding to LEF 1 regulates N CAM promoter activity . ^^^ During murine embryogenesis , expression of the paired like homeodomain protein Alx 4 is restricted to tissues whose development depends on the expression of lymphoid enhancer factor 1 ( LEF 1 ) . ^^^ Given the defects seen in hair follicle development in both LEF 1 and Alx 4 knockout and mutant animals and the overlapping expression patterns , we predicted that LEF 1 and Alx 4 might form physical complexes . ^^^ We demonstrate here the interaction between LEF 1 and Alx 4 . ^^^ This interaction is mediated through a specific proline rich domain in the N terminal region of Alx 4 and requires the DNA binding domain ( HMG box ) of LEF 1 . ^^^

RESULTS : Thirteen candidate genes showed significant evidence of linkage in the presence of disequilibrium , and ten of these were found to be expressed in relevant embryonic tissues : SP 100 , MLPH , HDAC 4 , LEF 1 , C6orf105 , CD 44 , ALX 4 , ZNF 202 , CRHR 1 , and MAPT . ^^^
