Ssdp proteins interact with the LIM domain binding protein Ldb 1 to regulate development . ^^^ We identified Ssdp proteins ( previously described as sequence specific , single stranded DNA binding proteins ) as components of Ldb 1 associated nuclear complexes in HeLa cells . ^^^ Ssdp proteins are associated with Ldb 1 in a variety of additional mammalian cell types . ^^^ In Xenopus , Ssdp encoded by Drosophila Ssdp or mouse Ssdp 1 mRNA enhances axis induction by Ldb 1 in conjunction with the LIM homeobox gene Xlim 1 . ^^^ Furthermore , we were able to demonstrate an interaction between Ssdp and Chip ( the fly homolog of Ldb 1 ) in Drosophila wing development . ^^^ |

In addition , SSDP specifically involves this complex supported by showing that both SSDP 1 and SSDP 2 bind to Ldb 1 in vivo . ^^^ Interestingly , the transcriptional function of SSDP 1 was not required for the interaction with Ldb 1 . ^^^ |

Lim 1 , Ssdp 1 , and Ldb 1 proteins are components of the Ldb 1 associated transcriptional complex , which is important in the head organizing activity during early mouse development . ^^^ Our data demonstrate that components of the Ldb 1 dependent module can be subdivided further into discrete functional domains and that the proline rich stretch of Ssdp 1 is critical for embryonic head development . ^^^ Furthermore , phylogenetic comparisons revealed that in Caenorhabditis elegans , a similar proline rich sequence is absent in Ssdp but present in Ldb 1 . ^^^ |

We show that reduced expression of single stranded DNA binding protein 1 ( Ssdp 1 ) , which encodes a co factor of LIM domain interacting protein 1 ( Ldb 1 ) , in the mouse mutant headshrinker ( hsk ) disrupts anterior head development by partially mimicking Lim 1 mutants . ^^^ Cell proliferation is globally reduced in Ssdp 1 ( hsk / hsk ) mutants , and approximately half also exhibit smaller body size , similar to the phenotype observed in Lim 1 and Ldb 1 mutants . ^^^ We also show that Ssdp 1 contains an activation domain and is able to enhance transcriptional activation through a Lim 1 Ldb1 complex in transfected cells , and that Ssdp 1 interacts genetically with Lim 1 and Ldb 1 in both head development and body growth . ^^^ |
