In vitro kinase assays demonstrate that IKK 1 phosphorylates 1 TRAF in the middle portion that associates with TRAF 2 . ^^^ NF kappaB activation by IKK 1 is significantly blocked by coexpression of the N terminal domain of 1 TRAF , dominant negative TRAF 2 , and dominant negative NIK and IKK beta . ^^^ NF kappaB activation by IKK 1 may be mediated through phosphorylation of 1 TRAF by IKK 1 and subsequent liberation of TRAF 2 . ^^^
