The main findings emerging from this study are : a ) a remarkable projection is directed from the rostral pole of the caudate putamen complex to rostral sectors of the globus pallidus ( GP ) and entopeduncular nucleus ( EP ) and its is organized in a topographical fashion ; b ) this projection presents a remarkable heterogeneity in the distribution of terminal labeling into the GP and EP ; c ) a heterogeneous distribution of retrogradely labeled cells was seen in the rostral striatum after retrograde tracer injections in the GP that might explain , at least partially , the heterogeneity observed in the anterograde experiments . . ^^^ |

At variance from observations made in the kidney , gp 330 and gp 90 are mainly expressed on different epithelial cell types : gp 330 is found on the coated pits of the epithelium lining the epididymis and on the entire surface of the microvilli of Type 2 pneumocytes , whereas gp 90 is detected on the gut brush border and the biliary pole of hepatocytes ; gp 90 is also found on endothelia lining all distal capillary beds studied in heart , lung , liver , and spleen . ^^^ |

The efferent connections of the caudal pole of the globus pallidus ( GP ) were examined in the rat by employing the anterograde axonal transport of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin ( PHA L ) , and the retrograde transport of fluorescent tracers combined with choline acetyltransferase ( ChAT ) or parvalbumin ( PV ) immunofluorescence histochemistry . ^^^ |

On the other hand , injections in the dorsal one third ( group 3 ) and the rostromedial pole ( group 4 ) of the GPi led to retrogradely labelled cells in the body of the caudate nucleus ( `` associative striatum ' ' ) and the ventral striatum ( `` limbic striatum ' ' ) , respectively . ^^^ |

The experimental groups were divided as follows : group 1 : injections in the dorsal one third of the GPi , retrograde labelling in the head and body of the caudate nucleus ( `` associative striatum ' ' ) ; group 2 : injections in the ventrolateral two thirds of the GPi , retrograde labelling in the postcommissural region of the putamen ( `` sensorimotor striatum ' ' ) ; and group 3 : injections in the rostromedial pole of the GPi , retrograde labelling in the ventral striatum ( `` limbic striatum ' ' ) . ^^^ The fields of fibers that arose from the dorsal one third and the rostromedial pole of the GPi were more widely spread than the afferents from the ventrolateral two thirds of the GPi . ^^^ |

In the pallidum , parallel gradients also delimit four territories , T 1 in the caudal half of external ( GPe ) and internal ( GPi ) divisions , characterized by enhanced PV and SMI 32 ir ; T 2 in their rostral half , characterized by enhanced CB ir ; and T 3 and T 4 in their rostroventral pole and in the subpallidal area , respectively , both expressing CB and CR ir but with different intensities . ^^^ |

Together with previous studies , our data suggest the existence of tightly connected functional circuits between the basal ganglia and the CM / Pf in primates : 1 ) A `` sensorimotor ' ' circuit links together the medial two thirds of CM , the postcommissural putamen , and the ventrolateral part of the caudal GPi ; 2 ) a `` limbic ' ' circuit involves the rostral one third of Pf , the ventral striatum , and the rostromedial pole of GPi ; and 3 ) an `` associative ' ' circuit exists between the caudal two thirds of Pf , the caudate nucleus , and the SNr . ^^^ |
