| Here we report that the Sam 68 like mammalian proteins SLM 1 and SLM 2 also stimulate Rev activity . ^^^ Their stimulation ability can not be attributed to a shuttling property , since Sam 68 , SLM 1 , and SLM 2 do not display significant shuttling activity alone or in the presence of Rev . ^^^ In addition , Sam 68 , SLM 1 , and SLM 2 do not affect the equilibrium between unspliced and completely spliced HIV RNA . ^^^ The C terminally truncated Sam 68 mutant ( Sam68DeltaC ) previously observed to inhibit the Sam 68 mediated stimulation of Rev activity ( Reddy et al . , 1999 ) also inhibits SLM 1 and SLM 2 mediated stimulation of Rev activity . ^^^ This suggests that the mechanism by which Sam 68 , SLM 1 , and SLM 2 stimulate Rev activity may be common . ^^^ |

| Sam 68 is a member of KH domain family that includes SLM 1 , SLM 2 ( Sam 68 like mammalian ) ; and QKI 5 , QKI 6 , and QKI 7 ( mouse quaking ) proteins . ^^^ We now report that SLM 1 and SLM 2 proteins , which are the closest relatives of Sam 68 , marginally enhanced RRE mediated transactivation , while QK isoforms that are distant relatives of Sam 68 had no effect . ^^^ |

| The nuclear tyrosine kinase BRK / Sik phosphorylates and inhibits the RNA binding activities of the Sam 68 like mammalian proteins SLM 1 and SLM 2 . ^^^ Here we demonstrate that the Sam 68 like mammalian proteins SLM 1 and SLM 2 but not the related KH domain containing heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K are novel substrates of BRK / Sik . ^^^ We show that SLM 1 , SLM 2 , and BRK / Sik have restricted patterns of expression unlike the ubiquitously expressed Sam 68 . ^^^ |
