| NUFIP mRNA expression is strikingly similar to that of the FMR 1 gene in neurones of cortex , hippocampus and cerebellum . ^^^ By two hybrid assay in yeast , we identified a novel protein interacting with FMRP : nuclear FMRP interacting protein ( NUFIP ) . ^^^ At the subcellular level , NUFIP colocalizes with nuclear isoforms of FMRP in a dot like pattern . ^^^ NUFIP does not interact with the FMRP homologues encoded by the FXR 1 and FXR 2 genes . ^^^ |

| NUFIP 1 ( nuclear FMRP interacting protein 1 ) is a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling protein associated with active synaptoneurosomes . ^^^ One of the FMRP interactors , NUFIP 1 , is an RNA binding protein with an expression profile matching that of FMRP . ^^^ NUFIP 1 is also present in the cytoplasm , where it is associated with ribosomes , similarly to FMRP . ^^^ These findings suggest the involvement of NUFIP 1 in the export and localization of mRNA and , in association with FMRP , in the regulation of local protein synthesis near synapses . . ^^^ |
