Phosphorylation and calmodulin binding of the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 ( mGluR 5 ) are antagonistic in vitro . ^^^ We herein report that calmodulin ( CaM ) interacts with the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 ( mGluR 5 ) in a Ca2+ dependent manner in vitro . ^^^ The CaM binding domains are separated by an alternatively spliced exon cassette present in one of the splicing isoforms of mGluR 5 . ^^^

Finally , overexpression of wild type calmodulin , which can bind mGluR 5 and inhibit phosphorylation , did not alter mGluR desensitization . ^^^ These data indicate a role for nonconventional protein kinase C isoforms as a mediator of mGluR 5 desensitization and that the phosphorylation of mGluR5a that competes with calmodulin binding does not mediate desensitization . . ^^^
