Msx 1 antagonizes the myogenic activity of Pax 3 in migrating limb muscle precursors . ^^^ Here we show that in chicken embryos , expression of the Msx 1 homeobox gene overlaps with Pax 3 in migrating limb muscle precursors , which are committed myoblasts that do not express myogenic differentiation genes such as MyoD . ^^^ Conversely , ectopic expression of Pax 3 activates MyoD expression , while co ectopic expression of Msx 1 and Pax 3 neutralizes their effects on MyoD . ^^^ Moreover , we find that Msx 1 represses and Pax 3 activates MyoD regulatory elements in cell culture , while in combination , Msx 1 and Pax 3 oppose each other ' s trancriptional actions on MyoD . ^^^ Finally , we show that the Msx 1 protein interacts with Pax 3 in vitro , thereby inhibiting DNA binding by Pax 3 . ^^^

The results show that Wnt signaling up regulates in a distinct temporal pattern the expression of several genes normally expressed in the dorsal neural tube ( slug , Pax 3 , Msx 1 , FoxD 3 , cadherin 6B ) at `` premigratory ' ' stages . ^^^ While slug is maintained in early migrating crest cells , Pax 3 , FoxD 3 , Msx 1 and cadherin 6B all are down regulated by the start of migration . ^^^
