| By subjecting the transformed cells to repeated subculturing in the presence of antibiotic selection coupled with auxotrophic enrichment , marker free aroA mutants of 10 73 and of P 1059 were isolated and designated PMP 1 and PMP 3 , respectively . ^^^ PMP 1 and PMP 3 were highly attenuated and capable of conferring complete protection against subsequent lethal challenge infection in a mouse model . ^^^ |

| Two auxotrophic aro A mutants of Pasteurella multocida designated PMP 1 ( serotype 1 ) and PMP 3 ( serotype 3 ) were tested as vaccine candidates to protect chickens against fowl cholera . ^^^ Dose protection studies indicated that at least 10 ( 6 ) colony forming units ( CFU ) of PMP 1 and 10 ( 8 ) CFU of PMP 3 were required to provide complete protection against challenge in all birds . ^^^ Future studies will examine the duration of protective immunity induced by the two vaccine candidates , PMP 1 and PMP 3 , and cross protection against other serovars . . ^^^ |
