PURPOSE : This retrospective review describes current surgical management of renal artery ( RA ) fibromuscular dysplasia ( FMD ) to define contemporary clinical characteristics and surgical results in patients over the age of 21 years . ^^^ METHODS : From January 1987 through March 1994 , 40 consecutive adults with hypertension had operative RA repair of FMD at our center and form the basis of this report . ^^^ From histologic and angiographic appearance , FMD was classified with regard to specific type , noting the presence of RA dissections , RA macroaneurysms and branch RA involvement . ^^^ CONCLUSION : A beneficial blood pressure response is currently observed in most selected patients after surgical correction of RA FMD . ^^^

OBJECTIVES : The purpose of this study was to compare color flow duplex imaging ( CFDI ) , intravascular ultrasound ( IVUS ) , and renal arteriography in diagnosing renal artery ( RA ) fibromuscular dysplasia ( FMD ) and correlating with the hemodynamic response to balloon angioplasty ( BA ) in patients with drug resistant hypertension . ^^^ BACKGROUND : Renal arteriography is generally regarded as the gold standard for diagnosing RA FMD . ^^^ The observation that CFDI and IVUS depicted endoluminal abnormalities suggestive of RA FMD in some patients with normal renal arteriograms prompted comparison of these modalities in a consecutive series of patients . ^^^ METHODS : Twenty hypertensive patients with CFDI suggestive of RA FMD ( mid to distal flow derangement and velocity augmentation ) underwent renal arteriography , IVUS , and BA , with both immediate and long term blood pressure ( BP ) response assessment . ^^^ CONCLUSIONS : Both CFDI and IVUS depict the blood flow and endoluminal abnormalities of RA FMD . ^^^

The aim of this study was to determine if FMD and PWA are abnormal in patients with RA . ^^^ RESULTS : Results ( mean + / SD ) in RA patients and controls , respectively , were as follows : FMD 107 . 6 + / 4 . 6 % versus 108 . 5 + / 4 . 1 % ( P = 0 . 49 ) , C 1 14 . 8 + / 2 . 8 ml / mm Hg 10 10 versus 17 . 9 + / 3 . 1 ml / mm Hg 10 10 ( P = 0 . 0033 ) , C 2 4 . 5 + / 2 . 3 ml / mm Hg 10 100 versus 7 . 7 + / 3 . 7 ml / mm Hg 10 100 ( P = 0 . 0039 ) . ^^^ CONCLUSION : FMD was normal in these RA patients , whereas arterial compliance was markedly reduced . ^^^ PWA appears to be a more sensitive measure of vascular dysfunction than FMD in RA and may be the preferred surrogate marker of vascular dysfunction in longitudinal studies of RA patients . ^^^

We report here the selective induction and isolation of functional spinal motor neurons ( MNs ) from human ES cells . hES cells of the H 1 line were transfected with plasmids encoding GFP placed under the control of an MN specifying enhancer within the 5 ' regulatory region of the gene encoding the transcription factor Hb 9 and treated with sonic hedgehog ( Shh ) and retinoic acid ( RA ) . ^^^ As MNs were induced under the influence of Shh and RA , they activated Hb 9 driven GFP expression , permitting their isolation by fluorescence activated cell sorting ( FACS ) . ^^^
