Mutation screen of GABRA 1 , GABRB 2 and GABRG 2 genes in Japanese patients with absence seizures . ^^^ We performed mutation analysis of all the coding exons of GABA ( A ) receptor alpha 1 , beta 2 and gamma 2 subunit ( GABRA 1 , GABRB 2 and GABRG 2 ) genes by direct sequencing to clarify whether there was common molecular biological mechanism underlying both typical and atypical absences . ^^^ We detected five polymorphisms ( T156C in GABRA 1 , C1194T in GABRB 2 , and C315T , T588C and C1230T in GABRG 2 ) , and they are silent mutations . ^^^ In conclusion , mutations in GABRA 1 , GABRB 2 and GABRG 2 do not seem to be a major genetic cause of epilepsy with typical and atypical absences in Japanese subjects . . ^^^

A GABA ( A ) receptor gene cluster on 5q31 35 ( beta 2 [ GABRB 2 ] , alpha 6 [ GABRA 6 ] , alpha 1 [ GABRA 1 ] , and gamma 2 [ GABRG 2 ] subunit genes ) is one of the most attractive candidate regions for schizophrenia susceptibility . ^^^ METHODS : We performed 1 ) systematic polymorphism search of GABRB 2 , GABRA 6 , and GABRA 1 , in addition to our colleague ' s study of GABRG 2 ; 2 ) evaluation of linkage disequilibrium ( LD ) within this cluster with 35 single nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs ) ; 3 ) `` selection of haplotype tagging ( ht ) SNPs ' ' ; and 4 ) two stage association analysis that comprised first set screening analysis of all htSNPs ( 288 Japanese schizophrenia patients and 288 control subjects ) and second set replication analysis of the positive htSNPs ( 901 schizophrenic patients and 806 control subjects ) . ^^^ RESULTS : In the first set scan , we found a significant association of two htSNPs in GABRA 1 , but no association of GABRB 2 , GABRA 6 , and GABRG 2 . ^^^
