The Cyca B2m polyclonal antiserum was used in conjunction with a similarly produced polyclonal antiserum to an MHC class 1 ( Cyca UA ) alpha chain to investigate the expression of class 1 molecules on peripheral blood leucocytes ( PBL ) at different permissive temperatures . ^^^

MHC class 1 expression was investigated in 47 OSCCs by immunohistochemistry using HCA 2 , HC 10 and beta 2 m antibodies . ^^^ The absence of beta 2 m was significantly associated with absent expression of MHC class 1 heavy chain as detected by HC 10 antibody ( P = 0 . 004 ) . ^^^ This study shows that the majority of OSCCs show weak or absent expression of MHC class 1 molecules on the cell surface , possibly due to alterations in the normal beta 2 m pathway . ^^^

Effect of B2m gene disruption on MHC determined odortypes . ^^^ In this article we provide further evidence for a central role of MHC genes themselves in odortype specification by demonstrating that mice that are unable to express their genomic class 1 MHC genes because they lack beta 2 microglobulin are distinguishable by scent from otherwise identical mice which possess an intact B2m gene . ^^^

To study MHC class 1 in myopathy , we compared muscles of SJL / J mice to muscles of SJL / J mice that were also MHC class 1 deficient due to targeted mutation in the beta 2 microglobulin gene ( SJL / J B2m ( / ) mice ) . ^^^ Muscles of eight month old SJL / J mice had higher levels of MHC class 1 expression than muscles of either C57BL / 6J ( wild type ) or SJL / J B2m ( / ) mice . ^^^

The regions analyzed consisted of the HLA class 1 heavy chain genes located within the MHC genomic region on chromosome arm 6p , the HLA class 1 light chain ( beta 2 microglobulin , B2M ) gene on chromosome arm 15q , and the putative HLA modifier of methylation gene ( MEMO 1 ) located on chromosome arm 1q . ^^^ Results revealed low frequencies of B2M ( 2 / 55 ) and MEMO 1 ( 5 / 42 ) LOH but a high frequency of MHC LOH ( 19 / 56 ) that was usually associated with whole chromosome 6 loss ( 13 / 19 ) . ^^^

MOTIVATION : The MHC superfamily ( MhcSF ) consists of immune system MHC class 1 ( MHC 1 ) proteins , along with proteins with a MHC 1 like structure that are involved in a large variety of biological processes . beta 2 Microglobulin ( B2M ) non covalent binding to MHC 1 proteins is required for their surface expression and function , whereas MHC 1 like proteins interact , or not , with B2M . ^^^ Application of our classifier to lower vertebrate MHC 1 proteins indicates that these proteins bind to B2M and should then be expressed on the cellular surface by a process similar to that of mammalian MHC 1 proteins . ^^^

We show here that mice lacking MHC Class Ia molecules ( K ( b / ) xD ( b / ) mice ) effectively control chronic gamma herpesvirus 68 ( gammaHV 68 ) infection via a robust expansion of beta 2 microglobulin ( beta 2 m ) dependent , but CD1d independent , unconventional CD 8 T cells . ^^^ This is the first demonstration to our knowledge that beta 2 m dependent , but Class Ia independent , unconventional CD 8 T cells can efficiently control chronic virus infection , implicating a role for beta 2 n dependent non classical MHC molecules in control of chronic viral infection . ^^^
