In order to evaluate the short term lung function effects of high pressure positive expiratory pressure ( PEP ) mask physiotherapy ( PT ) in relation to PT assisted sputum production , we studied 18 patients with cystic fibrosis ( CF ) , hospitalized for a pulmonary exacerbation . ^^^

Twenty patients with cystic fibrosis ( CF ) were trained to mobilize intrabronchial secretions by a new method of positive expiratory pressure mask ( PEP mask ) physiotherapy ( PT ) . ^^^ By dilating airways and evacuating trapped gas , this method of PEP mask PT improves lung function and mucus clearance in CF . ^^^

The aim of our study was to compare the short term efficacy of three different chest physiotherapy ( CPT ) regimens ( PD , postural drainage ; PEP , positive expiratory pressure physiotherapy ; HFCC , high frequency chest compression physiotherapy ) on patients with cystic fibrosis ( CF ) hospitalized for an acute pulmonary exacerbation . ^^^ Sixteen patients with CF , 8 males , 8 females , aged 15 27 years ( mean , 20 . 3 + / 4 ) , met the inclusion criteria : 1 ) age over 14 years ; 2 ) mild or moderate airway obstruction ; 3 ) sputum volume > 30 mL / day ; 4 ) being proficient in PD and PEP CPT . ^^^

Studies were considered relevant if they met the following criteria : randomized trials in patients with a definite diagnosis of CF ; an intervention of any combination of PEP , FET , STD , AD , or EX ; and an outcome of FEV 1 , sputum weight , or sputum clearance . ^^^

Three aliquots from each PEP product were used as PCR templates for the human 10 chromosome ( 10 ) or the exon 10 of the cystic fibrosis gene ( CF ) . ^^^

The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of the flutter and the positive expiratory pressure ( PEP ) mask on symptoms and lung function in children with CF . ^^^ In a crossover randomized study 22 patients with CF ( mean age 12 yrs , range 7 17 yrs ) performed physiotherapy using either the flutter or the PEP mask twice a day during two treatment periods of 2 weeks , separated by a one week wash out period , in a random sequence . ^^^

OBJECTIVES : To determine the clinical effects of a change from postural drainage ( PD ) to positive expiratory pressure chest physiotherapy ( PEP ) in children with cystic fibrosis ( CF ) and symptoms of gastro oesophageal reflux ( GOR ) . ^^^ METHODS : Study 1 : Six adolescents with CF and symptoms of GOR during PD were changed to upright PEP physiotherapy . ^^^ CONCLUSIONS : Upright PEP physiotherapy may be more appropriate than PD in selected patients with CF and symptomatic GOR . ^^^

After a Kleihauer test , fetal erythroblasts were collected by microdissection , whole genomic DNA was amplified by primer extension pre amplification ( PEP ) followed by a nested CF PCR . ^^^

OBJECTIVE : The objective was to evaluate the long term effects of physiotherapy with an oscillating positive pressure device ( `` flutter ' ' ) compared with physiotherapy with the use of a positive expiratory pressure ( PEP ) mask in patients with cystic fibrosis ( CF ) . ^^^ Study design : Forty children with CF were randomly assigned to performing physiotherapy with the PEP mask or the flutter device for 1 year . ^^^ CONCLUSION : Flutter was not as effective in maintaining pulmonary function in this group of patients with CF compared with PEP and was more costly because of the increased number of hospitalizations and antibiotic use . . ^^^

OBJECTIVES : To determine the effectiveness and acceptability of PEP devices compared to other forms of physiotherapy as a means of improving mucus clearance and other outcomes in people with CF . ^^^ SELECTION CRITERIA : Randomised controlled studies in which PEP was compared with any other form of physiotherapy in people with CF . ^^^

Therefore , this preliminary investigation described responses in distribution of ventilation and gas mixing to PEP breathing for patients with moderate to severe CF lung disease . ^^^ SUBJECTS AND METHODS : The effects of PEP breathing on ventilation distribution , gas mixing , lung volumes , expiratory airflow , percentage of arterial blood oxyhemoglobin saturation ( SpO ( 2 ) ) , and sputum volume were studied in 5 patients with CF ( mean age=18 years , SD=4 , range=13 22 ) after no PEP , low PEP ( 10 20 cm H ( 2 ) O ) , and high PEP ( > 20 cm H ( 2 ) O ) breathing conditions . ^^^ The results confirm that low PEP and high PEP improve gas mixing in individuals with CF , and these improvements were associated with increased lung function , sputum expectoration , and SpO ( 2 ) . ^^^

CONCLUSIONS : Dornase alfa is equally efficacious when delivered before or after physiotherapy / PEP in patients with CF . ^^^

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE : This investigation identified ventilation distribution , gas mixing , lung function , and arterial blood oxyhemoglobin saturation ( SpO 2 ) physiologic responses to 2 independent airway clearance treatments , high frequency chest wall oscillation ( HFCWO ) and low positive expiratory pressure ( PEP ) breathing , for subjects who had cystic fibrosis ( CF ) and who were hospitalized during acute and subacute phases of a pulmonary exacerbation . ^^^ DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION : High frequency chest wall oscillation and PEP breathing are similarly efficacious in improving ventilation distribution , gas mixing , and pulmonary function in hospitalized people with CF . ^^^
