Mre 11 and Ku 70 interact in somatic cells , but are differentially expressed in early meiosis . ^^^ We demonstrate here a physical interaction between mammalian Ku 70 , which is essential for NHEJ ( ref . 5 ) , and Mre 11 , which functions both in NHEJ and meiotic HR ( Refs 2 , 6 ) . ^^^ Moreover , we show that irradiated cells deficient for Ku 70 are incapable of targeting Mre 11 to subnuclear foci that may represent DNA repair complexes . ^^^ Nevertheless , Ku 70 and Mre 11 were differentially expressed during meiosis . ^^^ In the mouse testis , Mre 11 and Ku 70 co localized in nuclei of somatic cells and in the XY bivalent . ^^^

Here we describe two PCR based methods to monitor telomere length and examine the fate of dysfunctional telomeres in Arabidopsis lacking the catalytic subunit of telomerase ( TERT ) and the DNA repair proteins Ku 70 and Mre 11 . ^^^ In triple ku 70 tert mre 11 mutants , chromosome fusions were still detected , but microhomology at the junction was no longer favored . ^^^ These data indicate that both Ku 70 and Mre 11 contribute to fusion of critically shortened telomeres in higher eucaryotes . ^^^
