| Mammalian alpha 1 and beta 1 syntrophin bind to the alternative splice prone region of the dystrophin COOH terminus . ^^^ We have previously shown that this region is the locus that interacts with the sarcolemmal glycoprotein complex , which mediates membrane anchoring of dystrophin , as well as with the cytoplasmic peripheral membrane protein , A 0 and beta 1 syntrophin ( Suzuki , A . , M . ^^^ Two forms of mammalian syntrophin , alpha 1 and beta 1 syntrophin , were found to bind to very close but discrete regions on the dystrophin molecule . ^^^ In addition , A 0 , a minor component of dystrophin associated proteins with a molecular mass of 94 kD which is immunochemically related to syntrophin , binds to the same site as beta 1 syntrophin . ^^^ |

| The 59 kDa dystrophin associated protein triplet ( 59 DAP ) is a component of the dystrophin glycoprotein complex which may directly associate with dystrophin . ^^^ Affinity purified antibodies against rabbit 59 1 DAP fusion proteins only recognize the lowest band of the 59 DAP triplet in skeletal muscle sarcolemma and isolated dystrophin glycoprotein complex . ^^^ Levels of 59 1 DAP mRNA are unaffected in mdx mouse skeletal and cardiac muscles , although all dystrophin associated proteins , including 59 DAP , are greatly reduced in mdx mouse skeletal muscle . ^^^ However , in mdx mouse cardiac muscle , the up regulation of utrophin preserves all dystrophin associated proteins except 59 DAP . ^^^ Our results suggest that the 59 DAP triplet may contain different protein species and that the 59 1 DAP may associate more specifically with dystrophin than with utrophin . . ^^^ |
