Total BMD values decreased by a mean + / SEM of 14 . 4+ / 2 . 0 % in WT mice with IMO , compared with a decrease of 8 . 6+ / 1 . 2 % in iNOS KO mice with IMO ( P < 0 . 01 ) . ^^^

To evaluate the relative contribution of the GH / IGF axis to the development of peak bone mineral density ( BMD ) , we measured skeletal changes in IGF 1 knockout ( KO ) , IGF 2 KO , and GH deficient lit / lit mice and their corresponding control mice at d 23 ( prepubertal ) , 31 ( pubertal ) , and 56 ( postpubertal ) in the entire femur by dual energy 10 ray absorptiometry and in the mid diaphysis by peripheral quantitative computed tomography . ^^^ During puberty , BMD increased by 40 % in control mice and by 15 % in IGF 2 KO and GH deficient mice , whereas it did not increase in the IGF 1 KO mice . ^^^

Accordingly , femur BMD measured by dual energy 10 ray absorptiometry or peripheral quantitative computed tomography increased significantly in IGF 1 WT mice fed the low calcium diet , but not in IGF 1 KO mice . ^^^

In E 19 Fxr1 KO littermates , in addition to the absence of Fxr1p , costameric proteins vinculin , dystrophin and alpha actinin were found to be delocalized . ^^^

Bone mineral density ( BMD ) was significantly higher in nNOS knockout ( KO ) mice compared with wild type controls , particularly the trabecular BMD ( P < 0 . 01 ) . ^^^ The difference in BMD between nNOS KO and control mice was confirmed by histomorphometric analysis , which showed a 67 % increase in trabecular bone volume in nNOS KO mice when compared with controls ( P < 0 . 001 ) . ^^^

The objective was to compare bone mass ( bone mineral content [ BMC ] , bone mineral density [ BMD ] ) and biomechanical strength of femurs and lumbar vertebrae from male and female wild type ( WT ) and IL 10 knockout ( KO ) mice to determine if the IL 10 KO mouse model is appropriate for studying inflammation associated bone abnormalities and potential interventions . ^^^ IL 10 KO mice also experienced bone abnormalities as femur and verterbral BMC and BMD were lower ( P < 0 . 05 ) compared with WT mice . ^^^

Skeletal analysis showed small nonsignificant decreases in cortical bone density by BMD and either an increase ( distal femur , by microcomputed tomography ) or no difference ( distal femur , by static histomorphometry ) in trabecular bone density in KO mice . ^^^

IL 10 KO mice fed CO had lower femur bone mineral content ( BMC ; P < . 001 ) , bone mineral density ( BMD ; P < . 001 ) , peak load ( P= . 033 ) and lumbar vertebrae BMD ( P= . 02 ) compared to WT mice fed either diet . ^^^ Flaxseed oil had a modest , favorable effect on IL 10 KO mice as femur BMC , BMD and peak load were similar to WT mice fed CO or FO . ^^^ In addition , lumbar vertebra BMD was similar among IL 10 KO mice fed FO and WT mice fed CO or FO . ^^^ The fact that FO attenuated serum tumor necrosis factor alpha ( TNF alpha ) among IL 10 KO mice suggests that the positive effects of FO on femur BMC , BMD , peak load and vertebral BMD in IL 10 KO mice may have been partly mediated by changes in serum TNF alpha . ^^^

In WT mice , loss of trabecular BMD in the venous ligated limb was significantly less than that of the sham operated limb ; this effect , however , was not seen in KO or HET mice . ^^^
