| The role of cell adhesion molecules ( CAM ) LFA 1 , ICAM 1 , LFA 3 , VLA 1 , VLA 4 , CD 29 , CD 44 , and CD 56 in tumor infiltrating lymphocyte ( TIL ) and natural killer cell ( NK ) mediated killing of target cells was studied . ^^^ The melanoma cell lines analyzed were all positive for CD 29 and LFA 3 expression , negative for LFA 1 expression , but showed variable expression of ICAM 1 , VLA 1 , VLA 4 , CD 44 , and CD 56 . ^^^ The effects of anti CAM antibodies on TIL mediated melanoma killing fell into three categories : ( 1 ) consistent inhibition of TIL mediated killing was observed when melanoma cells were pretreated with anti ICAM 1 and anti LFA 3 MoAb or when TIL were pretreated with anti LFA 1 ; ( 2 ) no effect was observed when melanoma cells were pretreated with anti CD 56 ; or ( 3 ) a discreet , but significant , inhibition was observed when target cells were pretreated with anti CD 29 , anti VLA 1 , anti VLA 4 , and anti CD 44 . ^^^ |
