Hsp 27 negatively regulates cell death by interacting with cytochrome c . ^^^ We show that the small HSP known as Hsp 27 inhibits cytochrome c mediated activation of caspases in the cytosol . ^^^ Hsp 27 binds to cytochrome c released from the mitochondria to the cytosol and prevents cytochrome c mediated interaction of Apaf 1 with procaspase 9 . ^^^

We tested the hypotheses that HSP 27 may reduce poly ( Q ) mediated cell death either by binding cytochrome c and inhibiting the mitochondrial death pathway or by protecting against reactive oxygen species ( ROS ) . ^^^ While poly ( Q ) induced cell death was reduced by inhibiting cytochrome c ( cyt c ) release from mitochondria , protection by HSP 27 was regulated by its phosphorylation status and was independent of its ability to bind to cyt c . ^^^

Cell free 27 kDa heat shock protein ( hsp 27 ) and hsp 27 cytochrome c complexes in the cervix of women with ovarian or endometrial cancer . ^^^ We now report the detection of hsp 27 as well as hsp 27 cytochrome c complexes in cell free endocervical or posterior vaginal specimens from women with endometrial or ovarian cancer . ^^^ After removal of cellular components , aliquots of supernatants were assayed by ELISA for hsp 27 , using cytochrome c bound to microtiter plate wells , and for hsp 27 cytochrome c complexes , using antibodies to cytochrome c and hsp 27 . ^^^ Among 47 women with ovarian cancer , 38 . 3 % were positive for hsp 27 and 27 . 7 % had hsp 27 cytochrome c complexes . ^^^ Similarly , among 52 women with endometrial cancer , 34 . 6 % were hsp 27 positive and 30 . 8 % had hsp 27 cytochrome c complexes . ^^^
