This was associated with an increase in the aortic expression and phosphorylation of HSP 27 , which was localized to the vascular smooth muscle , but a decrease in the amount of phosphorylated ( P ) HSP 20 . ^^^ To determine if P HSP 27 inhibits phosphorylation of HSP 20 , P HSP 27 was added to a reaction mixture containing recombinant HSP 20 and the catalytic subunit of cAMP dependent protein kinase . ^^^ P HSP 27 inhibited phosphorylation of HSP 20 in a concentration dependent manner . ^^^ These data demonstrate that P HSP 27 can inhibit phosphorylation of HSP 20 . ^^^ The increase in P HSP 27 and decrease in P HSP 20 were associated with reduced cyclic nucleotide dependent vascular smooth muscle relaxation in response to behavioral stress in vivo , an effect similar to that observed previously in response to cellular stress in vitro . . ^^^ |

Recent data have implicated two small heat shock proteins ( HSPs ) , namely HSP 20 and HSP 27 , in the regulation of vascular tone . ^^^ Increases in the phosphorylation of HSP 20 are associated with vasorelaxation , and increases in the phosphorylation of HSP 27 are associated with impaired vasorelaxation . ^^^ Physiological responses were correlated with the expression and phosphorylation of HSP 20 and HSP 27 by using one and two dimensional immunoblots . ^^^ These changes were associated with decreased expression of both total and phosphorylated HSP 20 and increases in the amount of phosphorylated HSP 27 . ^^^ CONCLUSION : In this model , impaired relaxation of cerebral vessels after SAH was associated with increases in the amount of phosphorylated HSP 27 and decreases in the expression and phosphorylation of HSP 20 . ^^^ |
