Reciprocal regulation of neu tyrosine kinase activity and caveolin 1 protein expression in vitro and in vivo . ^^^ Here , we examine the relationship between Neu tyrosine kinase activity and caveolin 1 protein expression in vitro and in vivo . ^^^ Our current results show that mutational activation of c Neu down regulates caveolin 1 protein expression , but not caveolin 2 , in cultured NIH 3T3 and Rat 1 cells . ^^^ Conversely , recombinant overexpression of caveolin 1 blocks Neu mediated signal transduction in vivo . ^^^ These results suggest a reciprocal relationship between c Neu tyrosine kinase activity and caveolin 1 protein expression . ^^^

Caveolin 1 is down regulated and inversely correlated with HER 2 and EGFR expression status in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast . ^^^ Using a tissue microarray , caveolin 1 expression was also correlated with the expression of other antigens such as eostrogen receptor , progesterone receptor , epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR ) , HER 2 , beta catenin , E cadherin , p 53 , Ki 67 and with clinicopathological parameters . ^^^ Furthermore , a statistically significant inverse correlation between caveolin 1 and EGFR and HER 2 was noted ( P < 0 . 001 ) . ^^^ Caveolin 1 also shows an inverse correlation with EGFR and HER 2 , which fits with its function as a negative regulator of signal transduction . . ^^^

Further analysis by EST vNorthern and virtual microarray analysis reduced the candidate genes to six , with four down regulated genes , ANXA 1 , CAV 1 , KRT 5 and MMP 7 , and two up regulated genes , ERBB 2 and G1P3 in breast cancer . ^^^
