Using immunohistochemical and flow cytometric techniques , we have studied the significance of cellular expression of the Ki 67 antigen , epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR ) , the transferrin receptor ( TFR ) and DNA ploidy status in a prospective analysis of patients with SCCs of the head and neck region . ^^^ All 42 fresh tumour samples ( five well differentiated ; 28 moderately differentiated ; nine poorly differentiated ) expressed both EGFR and TFR to varying degrees . ^^^ Our results suggest that EGFR and TFR are widely distributed on SCCs , especially on proliferating cells at the invading tumour margin . ^^^ In addition , there is a close spatial correlation between cells expressing EGFR , TFR and those expressing the Ki 67 antigen . ^^^ Tumours in which the staining intensity for both EGFR and TFR was intense invariably expressed the Ki 67 antigen in a high proportion of cells . ^^^

OBJECTIVE : To evaluate the efficacy of two biomarkers , transferrin receptor ( TfR ) and epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR ) , for the early detection of cervical dysplasia and to explore the relationship of E 5 , one of three viral oncogenes expressed by the human papillomavirus ( HPV ) , to TfR and EGFR . ^^^ STUDY DESIGN : Two hundred seventy four patients were evaluated in two separate preclinical studies using EGFR and TfR in fluorescent antibody based assays . ^^^ CONCLUSION : Both EGFR and TfR assays detected HSIL with very high accuracy ( 100 % and 96 . 3 % , respectively ) . ^^^ Specificity of the TfR assay was slightly higher ( 81 . 3 % ) than that of the EGFR assay ( 73 . 3 % ) . ^^^ HPV E 5 induced disruption of intracellular endosomal acidification and its effects upon both EGFR and TfR may provide the specific mechanistic connection between overexpression of these receptor proteins , and HPV in fection and integration . ^^^

We undertook a comparative study of the presence of the epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR ) , interleukin 13 receptor ( IL13R ) , interleukin 4 receptor ( IL4R ) , and transferrin receptor ( TfR ) determined by immunofluorescence microscopy among fresh frozen tumor samples from 38 patients with high grade gliomas ( glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma ) . ^^^ The frequency of high receptor expression was 32 of 38 ( 84 % ) for EGFR , 30 of 38 ( 79 % ) for IL13R , 25 of 38 ( 66 % ) for TfR , and 17 of 38 ( 45 % ) for IL4R . ^^^ The safety profile may be improved with an agent directed to EGFR versus agents directed to TfR , IL4R , or IL13R . ^^^
