While the exact functions of RTN 1 to RTN 3 are unknown , mammalian RTN 4 A / Nogo A was shown to inhibit the regeneration of severed axons in the mammalian central nervous system ( CNS ) . ^^^ Reticulons ( RTNs ) are a family of evolutionary conserved proteins with four RTN paralogs ( RTN 1 , RTN 2 , RTN 3 , and RTN 4 ) present in land vertebrates . ^^^ Phylogenetic and syntenic relationships indicate that the identified fish rtn genes are orthologs of mammalian RTN 1 , RTN 2 , RTN 3 , and RTN 4 and that several paralogous fish genes ( e . g . , rtn 4 and rtn 6 ) resulted from genome duplication events early in actinopterygian evolution . ^^^
